Nashville Uber Toronto Workout

Today I did something different, too.

I went to the gym in the afternoon. This is rare. Very rare.

But good fun.

I started the morning in Nashville. Got up early, worked, and hit the airport at 7am. Had a couple of protein bars there, and then napped on a quick flight to Toronto.

Then I took a big leap of faith and took a $145 uber ride from the airport to my home... overall, it'll be cheaper than a rental car.

After petting the dog and cleaning his dirty ears, I biked to the gym for my first afternoon squat session in years.

Left hamstring was tight and my right IT band is still a tiny bit sore, but overall it was a good session.

Mornings and Meatheads in LAX and Nashville

This morning takes me from LAX to Nashville. I'm meeting a brand new coaching client that inspired a politically incorrect post (Below).

In the meantime, I rocked a short Meathead Monday workout at the hotel gym before hitting up LAX.

Politically Incorrect Post:

Work-Life Balance is a myth for the High Performer.

#truth => There is no Work Life Balance for us.

Balance suggests an equal weighting.

The fact is, there is not an equal weighting between work and non-work in our daily schedule.

There cannot be Balance given the BIG goals you want to accomplish.

Not having "balance" is neither good nor bad. It just is.

"People are disturbed not by a thing, but by their PERCEPTION of a thing." - Epictetus.

Forget balance. And get rid of the stress in your life that comes from not living some other person's definition of balance. What a waste of energy!

Instead, strive for the right Work-Life MIX for your dream life.

Your Empire, and your Perfect Life, whether it includes a $1 billion company, a $500,000 net income, or shutting down work at 3pm every day, is not built on balance.

It does not serve you to waste energy chasing society's opinion of "work life balance".

What is right for others is not right for YOU.

So take the energy wasted on being bothered and put it into growth and constant and never ending improvement.

I like the following quote, and hope you will too. It was a favorite of Marty Edelston, a man who built the Boardroom Inc. publishing empire through hard work and long hours, and who was very happy doing so while also raising a loving family and having an impact on millions of people:

"The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Bottom line:
Make the right decision, right now, for your right life. Always.

Sunday Fun Day

Woohoo, another Sunday Fun Day with Jay Ferruggia in Santa Monica.

Although my mom was partying back in Toronto with my sister, too.

That makes me wonder... who is taking care of the dog!!!???

Workout and Workshop in California

Yesterday was fun. Just look at the smile on my face in the picture below.

After a morning workout with Bedros I drove down to Costa Mesa and spoke to 400 awesome younger-ish folks at Jason Capital's High Status Summit.

It was a blast. My favorite audience in the last 2 years.

Then I had dinner with the one-and-only Vince Delmonte. It was so great.

We ate BIG at Mastro's steakhouse.

Today I was fueled up for a morning meathead workout of arms and shoulders, that was it. Good times.

Then i had to rush to a Perfect Life Workshop. And i'll do the same tomorrow, too. (The workshop, not the workout.)

Sunday we deadlift!

Remember, If the junk food is in your house, you are going to eat it. So get rid of it.

Perfect High Status Meathead Workout

This was my last morning in Chino Hills for this month. Bedros and I snuck in one more AM working at 24 hour fitness.

1A) Bench Press

2A) DB Press
2B) Chest Supported Row

And we filmed some videos and had a business meeting. A 10/10 trip to the gym. Wish every morning was like this.

Then I drove to Costa Mesa and spoke at the High Status Summit for my friend Jason Capital. Good times. Great audience.

Squats and Team Training at FBBC

This morning I got up earlier than usual, did some work, and then went over to 24-Hour Fitness for a 7am squat session with Bedros.

Next it was over to FBBC HQ for a Perfect Team Training session with several Fit Body Boot Camp franchise owners. It was awesome! We turned the rockstars into Superhero's to make them even more effective at changing lives. I loved it.

California Pushups and Pullups

On Sunday morning, very early, I hit a new 2017 personal best on pushups.

I'm shocked. But somehow I managed to crank out 57 reps - without caffeine. Then I flew to LA to spend the day with Jason Ferruggia.

Great Sunday!

On Monday I had a day off from training and did a 4-mile walk.

Today it was back into the garage gym, but not my garage. It was at Bedros Keuilian's home in California.

On Thursday I'm squatting, so today was an upper body workout.

Deadlifting on a Cold and Rainy Summer Morning Before Sunny LA

Today was my final workout on the farm before heading to Toronto for the night. I have an early flight to LAX. From there I'll meet Jay Ferruggia, and hopefully Australian trainer, Chris Dufey, too. We'll hit brunch, and I'm expecting Jay to lay waste to a lot of carbohydrates. He goes crazy every Sunday afternoon.

Since it was a deadlift session, that meant I had to leave the home gym and go to the local YMCA for some barbell time.

It all worked out perfectly, since the gym was quiet, even though it was an unseasonably cold and rainy August morning.

That was it. Solid session.

I plan to do something quick before the flight tomorrow morning.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
Spend an hour this morning thinking. Turn off your electronics. Avoid the Internet. Don't watch TV. Just sit and think. Finish your day with three hours free from all gadgets and TV. Spend the time in conversation or in love, but not in the digital world.

Remember my Paradox of Structure:

Structure includes boundaries for social media, email, and your phone.


For example, you should not go on your phone until after you have been awake for an hour or two. That way you can get something productive done each morning, like writing, BIG thinking, practicing a sales script, exercise, or meditation.

Likewise, you MUST have a boundary for when you shut your phone off each night. It should be at least an hour before bedtime, preferably two hours. This will help you wind down and fall asleep faster, and sleep deeper.

Proactive Approach

While my workouts are shorter these days, they are also more frequent. Today I did another lower body workout in the garage gym after a morning of heavy writing.

1A) KB Squats
1B) Ball Curl

2A) KB Lunge
2B) DB RDL

3A) Ball Plank
3B) Hammer Curl

The three weeks off from good lifting in Europe have really revved me up to do the more frequent workouts, and even some bodybuilding exercises. Just feels good. Lesson learned: Don't go on a barbell and dumbbell diet!

I need to be more PRO-active and plan workouts when I'm gone ... especially next year because I'm going on a safari in Africa with Joel followed with my annual trip to Europe (July-August 2018). So I'll be looking for good gyms in Cape Town and Jo'burg.

By the way, PRO-active is the best way to live.

You see, there are two types of people in life.


First, there are REACTIVE people that try to find time for what matters.


Second, there are PROACTIVE people that make time for the important matters.


It is the former that struggle, and the latter that succeed.


The difference comes down to two words. One person tries to find time, while the other makes time.


You can't find time! It's not hidden under your bed with Ab Rocker, collecting dust.


You have to make time for your priorities in life. One of the easiest ways to make more time is to get up early.


Success comes from what you do with your time, how you structure your day, the routines you create, and how you block the temptations and obstacles that try to get in your way.

1st of the month Workout

Happy 1st. Did you know:

I was in the garage gym and, thanks to my rehab efforts over the past few days, was able to have a pain-free back and biceps workout.

Today's lesson comes from JayZ...

The man turned himself from drug dealer to $500 million man (he's probably worth even more).

Now listen, I don't condone what he did... or does.

But we can learn from him.

One of his secrets to success is "Controlling the Narrative".

Jay-Z was the one who controlled the narrative about the past by being open about it... rather than letting others discover his dirty laundry.

By controlling the narrative, he controlled the world's perspective about his past.

Jay-Z set the EXPECTATIONS for how the world would deal with him.

That's the lesson for you today...

CONTROL THE NARRATIVE and set the expectations for the world to deal with you.

For example, you must control the narrative about how people can expect to communicate with you.

Here's how...

.................... Use The 3-B System .......................

Many people let their clients, co-workers, and friends ping them, buzz them and contact them through multiple methods of communication...

...and you feel obligated to get back to them ASAP.

This causes stress because you do not have Control of the Communication Narrative.

Listen,
FB, IG, and even email should NOT be the mode of communication if someone needs you to see something before the end of the day.

If it's on FB, it's not urgent.
If it's on any social media, it's not urgent for YOU to deal with.
Even email is not an emergency.

Here's the 3-B system...

If it's not broken, bleeding, or burning, it can wait till tomorrow. Or at least several hours.

If it is bleeding, broken, or burning, then it gets communicated to me by PHONE.

And I make sure this is known to everyone that communicates with me.

Communication expectations are about "controlling the narrative".

You can dictate "Office Hours" ...

Remember those from college?

Your professor said, "You can visit me between 2-4pm every Thursday. Otherwise, I'm busy."

The professor controlled the narrative and set the expectations, and we were thrilled to even get a breadcrumb of their time.

That's what you need to do in your business. That's what we ALL need to do.

And you know who's great at that?

True Empire Builders... Like Warren Buffett, Oprah, and even Zuckerberg (who stays off technology for hours everyday... even while he schemes to get you more addicted!)

So how do you retake control of the narrative around communication?

The answer...

Flip the script so that people aren't disappointed that you are not checking FB every moment of the day...

...and get them excited to know that you'll be available for 30 minutes every day at __ o'clock.

Clearly communicate the narrative.

Be in control of when people can contact you.

This will allow you to make time for what matters.

Remember...

There are two types of people in the world:

1) Proactive people MAKE time for what matters and they are successful.

2) Reactive people who try to FIND time (and fail to do so) and end up struggling in life.

Jay-Z was PRO-active in controlling his narrative, in being the one in charge of his story, and thus, in charge of his future fate.

And you must be PRO-active in controlling your communication narrative, and if you do, you will also control your future fate, and have more success and less stress.

Now get after it and take CONTROL!

Still Paying for Overdoing It Workout

Ugh, my neck was really mangled this weekend. I must have slept on it wrong Friday night. It's been irritated since a kettlebell swing workout the day after I returned from Europe, throwing off my training a bit.

The neck stopped me from training on Saturday, and I had to take Friday off because of early filming and an all-day workshop. Fortunately the tight neck didn't stop me from squatting on Sunday or doing presses today.

Sunday's workout was...

1A) Barbell Squats
1B) Box Jump

2A) Good Morning
2B) DB Lunges

I did two sessions of upper body mobility and lots of neck ROM stuff. I was much better this morning, but still did a long warm up before this garage gym meathead monday session:

1A) DB Chest Press (80x6x6)
1B) Band Pull

2A) DB Triceps Extension
2B) Rolling

Believe it or not, that's the extent of my workouts these days. I also do a lot of biking, too, now that summer is great.

Less is more, but it's hard to convince some TT'ers of that!

PS - How to dominate your days...

Sent this to one of my Perfect Life Workshop coaching clients... he just happens to be an actor on TV shows like Scandal, etc.

But a minor role player, and the father of two young kids, so his life is as stressed as anyone's... but here was my advice to him about having better mornings:

Your perfect morning routine starts the night before with a 4pm brain dump, to do list, and process planning session.

1) A "brain dump" is where you write down all of the work-related thoughts running through your head. This allows you to leave those thoughts behind and separates work time from personal/family time. Start using this exercise tonight. It allows you to be present with your family while not worrying about something from work.

2) After the brain dump, script your next workday, filling in blocks of time with important tasks to finish. List the #1 thing you need to work on first thing in the morning so that when you wake up you know exactly what to do.

3) Once you have chosen that priority, write down three steps to make it go smoothly. For example, if you wanted to write an article, then jot down three bullet points to make the writing easier... if you wanted to work on the bills, organize them into stacks and have everything ready to go... or if you wanted to rehearse a script, make sure it is open to the right page and make a few notes about the content so you are "already warmed up"

Other things you can do to make your morning easier include preparing your lunch the night before, laying out your work clothes, packing your work bag, and even sleeping in your (clean!) exercise clothes if you want to do that in the morning.

That makes your mornings flow freely, without anxiety, confusion, or rushing around.

PITN Pain in the Neck

This is embarrassing. I hurt my left neck/trap/rotator cuff over 10 days ago. If I sleep on my left shoulder, the injured area is tight in the morning.


It was bad this morning, and so that ruled out deadlifting, but I thought it would be okay for pressing. After a lengthy warm-up I decided against it and did some biking and sprints instead, along with extra rolling stretching. Tomorrow might work for deadlifts. If not, then it'll be squats. Either way, it's going to be a serious Sunday session. :)

Make Rules. List 3 rules that you will live by for the next 30 days. These rules are NOT meant to be broken. It could be: I will wake up at _am every day. I will meditate or pray for ___ minutes first thing each morning. I will drink ___ cups of water each day. I will exercise ___ minutes per day. I will call __ people every day. I will ___ every day before bed. Etc. Create 3 simple rules for 30 Perfect Days. Use your commitment to these 3 rules to grow stronger in all areas of life, discipline, commitment and love.


And use this plan at night, too:


Keep planning and preparing the night before and tackling that big project in the morning. That's what I did today to overcome the anxiety / stress / procrastination. It's what we must do!

If you're struggling or feeling frustrating... just do SOMETHING that moves you in the right direction. Action beats anxiety. Motion beats meditation.

Focus on what matters and get back to work doing it! ;)
