Fish Oils & Fat Loss

Today, the Men's Health email newsletter claimed that fish oils might be good for fat loss, because fish oils boost metabolism.

And recently John Berardi, Ph.D., and Chris Mohr, Ph.D, have also talked about the potential for fish oils to help people lose fat.

So...do fish oils work for fat loss?

I'm not convinced that they do...but if they do, the effects would likely be very subtle.

Anecdotally, I just have not seen a dramatic effect of fish oils on fat loss in myself, my training partners, or anyone else I know that uses fish oils. Granted, it's pretty tough to separate out the exact effect of fish oils on fat loss.

Now, given the information that I posted the other day about fish oil quality, it seems that many people might not even be getting good, quality fish oil in the first place.

So the bottomline for fish oil: If you use it, don't expect to "feel" anything when you take it, but have your doctor monitor your blood lipids and that is where you should see a difference. And most importantly, make sure you are using a high quality brand - as the cheap, low-quality stuff might be having negative effects on your health.
